Helvetica Spotted

So this time, our assignment was to find something that used the Helvetica typeface, and dictate whether it was used well or not. I figured it would be pretty simple to find something that used Helvetica, and I was right. Lo and behold, on my bookshelf I found this: my Documentation and Research handbook.

Personally, I think it's used very well here. It's a very simple, clean design, with nothing to distract from the information. The kerning on the heading and author names is done quite nicely, although I would've given a little less space between words in "the Electronic Age". There are four colours here, which I think could have been lessened, but it still works well in terms of contrast, i.e. the orange 5 and green names sticking out against the blue bar and black background respectively.

PS: I really must remember to update this thing.

Futurism-Inspired Piece

"Life and art are processes of random chance and willful choice." - Marcel Duchamp

This quote by Dadaist Marcel Duchamp really stuck with me, as I think it can really apply to any one of us, art-inclined or not.   Life is only what you willingly make of it, and inspiration often comes out of random chance, and can't be forced upon us. Making this quote into a Futurism-esque piece was a little tricky (I tried to make it as legible as possible while staying within the style) but I think I managed to pull it off.

Let the Photos Begin

Well, I might as well start this off with some content, so as to not disappoint. In my exploration of a freezing downtown Nanaimo, I couldn't help but be drawn to this logo outside of RLR Lawyers on Richards St.

Every time I've passed this one, something about its simplicity (both in design and colour) really drew me to it. Combine that with very tactful spacing and contrast, and you've got a fairly effective logo on your hands.
Considering there isn't much in terms of really adventurous design around my area of town, settling for a well-built company logo seemed like a sensible second choice. Or, maybe it's just a sign I need to get out of the house more. Once the ice is gone, perhaps.

Until next week, folks.
